The package redefines the eqnarray in default LaTeX, both to remove the ridiculous space around the second column, and to correct a few other bugs.

That which the package mends, is dealt with in the (required) package , in the form of several alternative environments. Note that the (LaTeX 2e) seems not to deal with the spacing issue.
